Gautam Gambhir, the newly appointed head coach of India, believes that if fit, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma may continue playing until the 2027 ODI World Cup despite the fact that players will have a final say.
The 37-year-old Rohit and 35-year-old Kohli bid farewell to T20 Internationals. They will however carry on with Tests and ODIs.
In his first press conference after taking over from Rahul Dravid, Gambhir talked about experience and skills. Which are brought by Kohliand Sharma into the team stating their immense performances in major tournaments like T20 World Cup and 50-over World Cup.
“I believe they’ve demonstrated what they can do on global platforms be it T20 World Cup or the 50 over World Cups,” said Gambhir to reporters.
“I know one thing for sure is that both those guys have got plenty of cricket left in them. And especially because there’s a Champions Trophy (in 2025) and then a big tour of Australia [late next year]. So obviously they would be motivated enough,” he added.
“Then hopefully after staying injury free till the 2027 world cup as well. But this is a very personal decision. I can’t tell you how much cricket is still left in them. Ultimately it depends upon themselves as players that how much they can do towards success of the team” he further explained.
While underlining focus on team achievements instead of individual performers. Gambhir also acknowledged the immense worth which Kohliand Sharma bring to the team with their world-class capabilities.
“But ultimately its all about the group. But seeing what Virat and Rohit are capable of doing, I don’t think they have finished playing yet. They’re top level players and would be assets to any side for however long possible” added Gautam Gambhir
India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir takes charge officially, with three. T20 internationals and three ODIs against Sri Lanka starting on Saturday in Pallekele.
