R Ashwin, India’s leading off-spinner, unexpectedly announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket on Wednesday. This announcement came amidst the ongoing Test series against Australia.
Ashwin’s heartfelt video message, accompanied by a poignant Tamil song, reveals a personal side of the cricketer. The lyrics speak to his connection to the game and the memories he cherishes.
The Tamil song’s lyrics translate to: “My cherished, oh, my only one! No matter how far apart we are, you are always there in my thoughts. You have done your share ! Bear us all, like the ground does under you.”

He retires as India’s second-highest Test wicket-taker, with 537 wickets in 106 matches. This places him behind only Anil Kumble’s 619 wickets.
Ashwin will continue playing club cricket, including the IPL for the Chennai Super Kings next year.
He made the announcement during a joint press conference with captain Rohit Sharma after the drawn third Test in Australia.
“I won’t take too much of your time. Today will be the last day for me as an India cricketer in all formats,” Ashwin stated, declining further questions.
Hours before the announcement, Ashwin shared an emotional moment with Virat Kohli in the dressing room, sparking social media speculation.
The 38-year-old took one wicket in the Adelaide day-night Test. His uncertain position in the playing eleven throughout the series likely influenced his decision to retire.
Ashwin was known for both his bowling skills and his sharp cricketing mind.
The Chennai-born engineer, usually reserved, appeared emotional alongside Rohit Sharma. He left the stage to avoid being overwhelmed by the moment.
“I do feel there is bit of punch left in me as a cricketer but I would like to showcase that in club level cricket. I have had a lot of fun. I must I have created a lot of memories alongside Rohit and several of my other teammates,” Ashwin expressed.
“I have lost some of them over the last few years (in the team). We are the last bunch of OG’s left in the dressing room. I would be marking this as my date of having played at this level,” he added, referencing players like Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara.
Ashwin’s international career included 116 ODIs with 156 wickets and 65 T20Is with 72 wickets. His career began in 2010 with ODIs, followed by his Test debut in 2011.
“A lot of people to thank but I would be failing in my duties if I did not thank BCCI and fellow teammates. I want to name a few of them. Most importantly Rohit, Virat, Ajinkya, Pujara who have taken those hundred catches around the bat to give me those wickets I managed to get over the years.
Big thank you the Australian cricket team, I have enjoyed playing against them.” Ashwin acknowledged the contributions of the BCCI, teammates, and the Australian team.
He also thanked the media for their support.
“It is an emotional moment. Please pardon me for that (not taking questions). Thanks for writing good things about me and some nasty things on occasions,” Ashwin quipped before leaving to a standing ovation.
