Talat Hussain, the veteran Pakistani actor, has died at the age of 83 in Karachi
Pakistan’s entertainment industry has been left in an inconsolable state by the death of one its most legendary performers, Talat Hussain who passed away on Sunday at 83. After a long illness, the veteran film, theatre, television and radio performer finally breathed his last breaths in a private hospital located in Karachi.
The President of Arts Council of Pakistan (ACP) Karachi Mr Ahmed Shah confirmed the news about Talat Hussein’s demise. According to Shah who eulogized him as “An acclaimed actor like Talat Hussain is born after centuries.”
Hussain was born in Delhi; he had a powerful voice on his disposal which complimented his unique acting style and won him millions of fans. A recipient of many prestigious awards, including Pride of Performance award in 1982, Pakistan’s highest literary honour; Sitara-i-Imtiaz 2021 – third highest civilian award.
President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif provincial Chief ministers among other eminent figures paid homage to him. According to Prime Minister Sharif “His services for Pakistan television, theater, films and radio will always be remembered. The void left by his death can never be filled.”
Talat Hussain’s career spanned several decades leaving an indelible imprint on Pakistani art. He stole viewers’ hearts with exceptional performances on TV serial Bandish, Karwaan, Hawain, Parchaiyan while film enthusiasts cherished Chiragh Jalta Raha, Gumnaam as well as Actor in Law among others. Notably Indian movie Sauten Ki Beti also featured him.
Hussain embarked on his artistic journey in 1960 on state-owned PTV channel Interestingly enough he did not limit himself exclusively within Pakistan but went ahead to refine his act at renowned London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and even worked for British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in London for some time.
Hussain’s talent transcended national boundaries. In 2006, he won the prestigious Amanda Award, also known as the Scandinavian Oscar, for his role in the Norwegian film Import-Eksport. He was also recognized in Pakistan, receiving the Nigar Award in 1986 for Best Supporting Actor in the film Miss Bangkok.
According to media reports from Pakistan Talat Hussain is survived by his wife Rakhshanda Hussain and two daughters and a son.
