Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday (November 27, 2024) said police personnel should speak politely to the public who come to them with grievances.

The Chief Minister made these remarks at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai, while handing over appointment orders to 1,000 new police recruits. As many as 2,599 Grade-II constables, 86 prison wardens, 674 fire safety personnel — a total of 3,359 persons — were selected and recruited through the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Service Recruitment Board.

Mr. Stalin said in the last three years, his government has appointed 17,435 persons from the rank of constable to Deputy Superintendent of Police in the Police Department, 1,252 in the Fire and Rescue Services Department, and 366 in the Prison and Correctional Services Department.

Listing out the welfare measures launched by the government for police personnel in the State, Mr. Stalin said, “I am glad to inform you that the period of the Dravida model government is a golden one for the Police Department.”

Mr. Stalin reiterated that it must be the top priority of the department to prevent crimes, besides the maintenance of law and order. Stating that curbing cybercrime, drug menace, and crimes against women and children are some of the challenges faced by the department, he called upon the new recruits to face them head-on.

“You should have a view of social justice and should not have a communally discriminatory view. You should work in an impartial manner. It is important that you uphold the law. Speak politely to the public who come to you with their grievances. Your talk and demeanour will give them confidence that their grievance will be resolved,” said the Chief Minister.

Stating that senior police officers should not show any discrimination based on rank seniority, Mr. Stalin said: “What I expect from officers is that you should not show rank seniority to the personnel below you. You should be friendly with lower-rung constables without showing rank differentiation. You should show love and affection to them as a family. Police personnel should not fear you, rather they should respect you.”

Minister for Law, Courts and Prisons S. Ragupathy, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Dheeraj Kumar, and Director General of Police Shankar Jiwal were present on the occasion.
