Amit Mishra appeared on a youtube video on Tuesday, saying that he would not have chosen Shubman Gill as the captain for India in the T20I cricket match against Zimbabwe, but instead chose to go with Ruturaj Gaikwad. Mishra, who played 22 Tests, 36 ODIs and 10 T20Is for India said that it was a surprise to him when Shubman was made captain.
Shubman led India to a 4-1 series win over Zimbabwe in their recently concluded T20I series despite all the controversies.
Amit Mishra told Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube podcast “I will never make Shubhan Gill my captain because I see it in IPL you know he does not even have an idea on how to captain. (He should never be the Captain of this side. Have seen this year’s IPL? He cannot be trusted with captaincy)”. And “He shouldn’t be made the captain just because he is part of Indian team. He has done well in previous few seasons of IPL, also did well in Indian team too. The Indian team must have handed him the leadership role as they want him to get some experience which he didn’t get while playing for Gujarat Titans during IPL,” he added.
Amit Mishra threw names of Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant and Ruturaj Gaikwad who could be given India’s shortest format Captainship. Besides Pant, Gaikwad and Samson were also involved in Zimbabwe T20I series.
“Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant and Ruturaj Gaikwad can lead India in T20Is now BCCI is only looking at all possible options,” Amit Mishra said.
“Does it mean Rahul Dravid’s ‘like-mindedness’ brought about Shubman being appointed as Captain of India?” asked Shubankar Mishra, to which Mishra replied: “Everyone has favourites. I don’t hate Shubman Gill, I like him too. But if you see the way Ruturaj scores runs for Chennai Super Kings or even in Asian Games then Ruturaj is a better choice. He is an option that should be retained in the team much like Yashasvi Jaiswal in India’s T20 World Cup,” he stated.
“He is someone who can deliver in T20Is, ODIs and Tests. Most importantly – who brings calmness to the team? His game doesn’t have too many risky shots; he should get a good (PR) manager for social media” he further explained.
