Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday (January 11, 2025) announced that seven special courts would hear cases involving sexual assault on women. These courts will be set up in Madurai, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, Salem, Tiruchi, and Chennai and neighbouring areas.
In his reply to the Governor’s address in the Assembly, Mr. Stalin said a special committee headed by the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) would be set up to speed up the trials in cases in all the districts of the State.
He said the Tamil Nadu Prison Rules, 1983, would be amended to ensure that persons accused in sexual assault cases were not granted bail.
Earlier in the day, the Assembly passed the Criminal Laws (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women (Amendment) Bill, 2025. The Bills were moved by Mr. Stalin in the Assembly on Friday (January 10, 2025).
