Rocky Flintoff, who is the son of England’s renowned all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, grabbed the headlines at the tender age of Thursday as he became the youngest ever Lancashire County Championship debutant.
The 16 year old showed off his skills in his first-class debut against Surrey at The Oval.
At No. 4 Rocky came in to bat when Lancashire was pegged back at 33/2 during the 11th over. His start against Sam Curran, a seasoned professional and sledgehammer bowler, seemed dark. Rocky had to be patient until he played seven consecutive dot balls to finally get off the mark. He eventually broke through, hitting three boundaries on his way to an eventual knock that showcased his potential and technique.
However, Clark had Rocky dismissed for 32 in the 30th over. Sai Sudharsan caught a brilliant catch at point finishing up on Rocky’s innings outburst. They were thus left with a difficult task as they slipped further down into despair at 98/4. By taking all ten wickets to fall in their opponents innings, Surrey’s bowlers maintained dominance over the game ensuring that Lancashire finished with just a score of 204.
In those early moments of batting by him, one could see Rocky’s exceptional aptitude that reflects upon strong basics acquired while playing cricket since childhood.
