Renny, can you tell us about the casting process for The Strangers: Chapter One? What made you choose Madelaine Petsch?riverdale‘Famous for the lead role?
Renny Harlin: Well, I would say the first criterion was finding good actors, especially the character of Maya, played by Madeleine, which was extremely challenging because she goes through a transformation in these three films. We shoot all the movies together, so it’s very challenging for her to be able to emotionally switch from one movie to another in a day. She had to be physically capable to do that because the movies, especially the second and third movies, required a lot of physical prowess. So she had a really, really challenging journey as an actor.
As we met with many of the actors and had long Zoom meetings, we just felt like we had to click and find the right ones. In a way, you want someone who is slightly famous so that the audience has a little bit of recollection of the person, but you don’t want someone who is so famous that the film loses its relevance and reality.
When we meet Madeleine, it’s immediately clear. Her energy, intelligence and sense of humor fit perfectly with the character and the film. She became a partner in developing the script and story almost immediately, and was ready to dive into the incredible challenges of making these films.
As for Emma, we are looking for someone who can complement Madeleine’s performance and bring depth to her character. Emma blew us away with her audition and her chemistry with Madeleine is undeniable. We knew she was perfect for the role.
What’s the biggest risk when casting young actors in Hollywood, especially in a film trilogy?
Renny Harlin: The biggest risk is finding actors who are not only talented, but also have the dedication and stamina to meet the demands of the role. For “Strangers,” we needed actors who could transition seamlessly between emotional and physical challenges, often within the same scene. Finding performers who could bring authenticity and depth to the role while embodying the physicality required for the intense action sequences was crucial.
We were fortunate to assemble a cast that not only met but exceeded our expectations. Madeleine, Emma, and the rest of the cast deliver great performances in every scene, and their commitment to their characters elevates the entire project.
Even for a character like The Stranger who spends much of the movie wearing a mask, we need actors who can convey emotion and nuance through subtle movements and expressions. It was a challenging process, but ultimately rewarding, and I’m incredibly proud of the cast we assembled for The Strangers: Chapter One.
Rachel Shenton also stars, Gabriel Basso, Emma HorvathRichard Brake (Richard Brake) and Ella Bruccoleri (Ella Bruccoleri) directed the first part of the new trilogy “Strangers: Chapter One” is expected to be released on May 17.
