Gandhi described the incidents as “horrible sexual violence” unleashed by current MP Hassan and claimed Revanna sexually assaulted and filmed hundreds of women over several years
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has written to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah urging him to report victims of JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna’s actions Provide all possible assistance.
In his letter to Siddaramaiah, Gandhi condemned the conduct of southern state MP Revanna and accused him of enjoying immunity with the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah .
In a veiled attack on Modi, the Congress leader said he had never seen a senior public representative continually choose silence in the face of countless acts of violence against women.
“I request you to extend all possible support to the victims,” Gandhi said in his letter to the Karnataka chief minister.
“They deserve our sympathy and solidarity as they fight for justice. We have a collective responsibility to ensure that all parties responsible for these heinous crimes are brought to justice.
Gandhi described the incidents as “horrific sexual violence” perpetrated by Hassan, now a member of Parliament, and claimed Revanna sexually assaulted and filmed hundreds of women over several years.
“Many of those who considered him a brother and a son were subjected to the most violent cruelty and stripped of their dignity. The rape of our mothers and sisters deserves the harshest punishment.
“I was deeply shocked to learn that as early as December 2023, Shri G Devaraje Gowda informed our Home Minister Shri Amit Shah about Prajwal Revanna’s antecedents, specifically his history of sexual violence and the videos shot by the perpetrators.” said the former Congress president.
What’s even more shocking, he said, is that while these horrific allegations have attracted the attention of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s top leadership at the centre, Modi campaigned and lobbied for “mass rapists”.
“Furthermore, the federal government deliberately allowed him to flee India to undermine any meaningful investigation. The grossly aberrant nature of these crimes and the absolute immunity that Prajiwal Revana enjoyed with the blessings of the Prime Minister and Home Minister deserve the strongest condemnation.
“In my two decades of public life, I have never come across a senior public representative who consistently chose silence in the face of countless acts of violence against women. From a wrestler in Haryana to a man in Manipur Sisters, Indian women bear the brunt of the Prime Minister’s tacit support for such criminals.
Against this backdrop, Gandhi said the Congress had a moral responsibility to seek justice for “our mothers and sisters”.
“It is my understanding that the Karnataka government has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate these serious allegations and has made a request to the Prime Minister to revoke Prajwal Revanna’s diplomatic passport and extradite him at the earliest to India.
Siddaramaiah posted Gandhi’s letter on X.
“The recent case involving Prajwal Revana has deeply troubled the nation. Justice for the victims is crucial to maintaining confidence in our legal system. Shri @RahulGandhi has written a letter emphasizing on the need for victims support. We are committed to providing all necessary assistance to ensure a fair process,” the veteran congressional leader wrote on the Weibo platform.
Revanna, a Janata Dal (Secular) MP from Holenarasipura in Karnataka’s Hassan district, is the son of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda and the elder brother of former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy. He faces charges of sexually abusing women.
