Paris Olympics 2024 Day 8 Live Updates: Bach on defamation campaign.
Thomas Bach called the IBA’s position a fraction of what he said was a campaign of defamation. IBA did not respond immediately to the request for comment.
“Thus, we can see that the defamatory campaign of Russia against France and IOC has already begun before these games”, said Bach.
“There have been some comments in this regard that I don’t want to repeat.”
IBA President Umar Kremlev, a successful Russian entrepreneur, has repeatedly posted provocative remarks on social media against both Bach and IOC after their decision allowing them to compete at the Games.
“And I would just ask that everyone respects these women for who they are as women and as human beings,” added Bach. “For if you talk about human rights then every woman must be free to participate in women competitions.”
He told Reuters his daughter had his full support and he was proud of her for representing Algeria in the hope of winning a medal.
Bach asserted that boxing should stay in Olympics due to its role in society particularly towards needy groups but it needed a new global organization.
“Very clearly yes,” he responded when asked if boxing should be included in future Olympics. “Boxing is one of the most global sports, a sport with very high social values. In any country many boxers tend to come from underprivileged parts of society and boxing offers them many opportunities not only on the field of play but also off the field of play.”
And it is also true for females and Khelif is an evidence of it.
“Therefore, it’s even more dreadful what’s happening with Imane right now through social media because she made it clear she stands up for women’s rights in her country but boxing gives her an opportunity to express herself like this one.”
