Paris Olympics 2024 Day 14 Live Updates: Neeraj Chopra, the superstar, has ended up with a silver medal in javelin throw for men that Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan broke the Olympic record and won gold in; however, Indian hockey team gave India some hope by delivering a long-awaited bronze medal. It means that India is set to finish this edition of Games without getting any gold medals.
India finished 63rd in the medals table with one silver for Chopra and four bronzes (three of them arrived last week through shooting). The arch-rival Pakistan was ranked above their neighbors due to Nadeem’s gold which was also their only medal at Tokyo Games.
India’s contingent having witnessed Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification in the final bout of 50kg wrestling gold at Tokyo Olympics a day earlier was now looking forward to hockey’s podium performance as well as Chopra’s Javelin throws.
They both did so but with his back-to-back Olympic medals making him an Indian athletics hero, it appeared rather underwhelming from Chopra who managed just one valid throw- an 89.45m effort which earned him a medal.
Nadeem threw for 92.97m during his winning attempt which included snatching away the gold from India’s other participant at Tokyo games, although it was season best performance for him.
The previous Olympic record held by Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen dated back to Beijing Olympic Games. It stood at 90.57 metres.
Thokildsen had been present when Czech Republic’s Jan Zelezny cleared almost hundred metres on three occasions and successfully defended his Olympic title (2008) five years later.
However, he joined there after becoming the first track athlete but only third Indian ever to make consecutive individual appearances on Olympic podiums.
So far two other Indians have won back-to-back Summer Olympics medals including former wrestler Sushil Kumar (2008 and 2012) and shuttler PV Sindhu (2016 and 2021).
