Jasprit Bumrah pulled up while bowling in the second session on Day 2 of the pink-ball Test against Australia in Adelaide, leading to concerns about a potential injury as he continues to bear the wicket-taking load for India in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
The incident happened after Bumrah had delivered the third ball in the 20th over of his spell in Australia’s first innings. India’s physio was called onto the field immediately and spent around 7 to 8 minutes to check on the Indian bowling attack’s spearhead, with possible an issue with his abductor muscle.
However, to allay fears, Bumrah was back on his feet soon and continued bowling without any visible discomfort.
Bumrah, who took eight wickets in India’s victory in the first Test in Perth, remained the pick of India’s bowling in Adelaide as well. He took three of the five Australian wickets to fall, as the home team went past India’s 180 to take the lead — thanks to a century by Travis Head (140).
There have been concerns about Bumrah’s workload with the other pacers in India’s line-up not near as consistent as him, while there was a suggestion made by former India coach Ravi Shastri on live commentary that India need Mohammed Shami “sooner than later.
Shastri felt Shami is likely to join the squad for the fourth Test in Melbourne, if not for the third in Brisbane.
Shami, who has resumed playing competitive cricket after a long rehab following ankle surgery, is currently playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy back home and under close observation of the National Cricket Academy trainers.
