On Friday, OpenAI announced that it had closed accounts belonging to an Iranian group using its chatbot ChatGPT to create election content for the United States and other topics.
ChatGPT operated under the name Storm-2035, which supplied information on US elections, Gaza conflict, Israel’s participation in Olympic games among others.
The investigation by Microsoft supported company found out that ChatGPT was used for long-form articles production as well as shorter social media comments.
OpenAI said that the operation did not seem to have received any appreciable audience engagement.
Most of these social media posts received little or no likes, shares or comments while there were no signs of web articles passed around on social media according to OpenAI.
Such accounts have been barred from using OpenAI services and the organization is still monitoring their activities to prevent future attempts at policy violations.
In August, a threat intelligence report by Microsoft stated that Iran-based network Storm-2035 operates through four websites disguised as news platforms and targets voters on opposite sides of the American political spectrum.
This mode of engagement was sustained with “polarizing messaging on issues such as the US presidential candidates, LGBTQ rights, and the Israel-Hamas conflict,” read the report.
Ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican rival Donald Trump are tied in a close race.
According to AI firm in May it disclosed that it has cracked five clandestine influence campaigns aimed at deploying “deceptive activity” across its models and throughout internet.
