Indian politics is very dynamic when it comes to Lok Sabha electionEspecially in north India, it’s mostly about the BJP and the Congress. However, Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar and Baramulla Lok Sabha seats have not elected a single party for over 25-30 years, making them similar to Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri, which was elected in 1984 The final vote in the polls went to the Nationalist Congress Party.

While in Maipuri, where the Samajwadi Party has been contesting elections since 1996, the two Lok Sabha seats in J&K elect either the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party or the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference.

The BJP has never elected from these seats. On the other hand, the Congress party was last elected in Baramulla and Srinagar in 1996. , the Congress won 3 times in Baramulla.

Mainpuri

The Samajwadi Party has swept seats in seven Lok Sabha elections and two by-elections held since 1996. The then party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav was first elected in 1996 and re-elected in 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019. He later vacated the seat and became the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2014. In the subsequent election, his party retained its seats.

In Maipuri, the Congress won only five times, in 1952, 1962, 1967, 1971 and 1984. The Janata Party (1977), Janata Party (1991), Janata Party (1989) and Janata Party (Secular) (1980) were also selected.

srinagar

Elections to the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat have been held 13 times since 1967, and the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC), the political party founded by the late Sheikh Abdullah, has been elected 10 times. His wife Begum Akbar Jehan, their son Farooq and later grandson Omar were elected a total of seven times.

The party failed to win seats only three times: in the 1971 independent candidate election, in 1996 when the Congress won, and in 2014 when the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won. The BJP contested the 2014 elections in alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Mehbooba Mufti. Although NC lost the 2014 polls, it was successfully re-elected in a 2017 by-election following the resignation of the PDP’s Tariq Hamid Karra.

Baramulla

There have been 14 Lok Sabha elections held in this seat since 1957, of which the NC won 9 times. The Congress has been elected four times – in 1957, 1967, 1971 and 1996.

These three seats will be contested in Lok Sabha elections at different stages. In the third phase, Mainpuri will go to polls on May 7, Srinagar on May 13 and Baramulla on May 20.
