Earlier today in the match played at Tarouba, West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran made history by overtaking the record for the most runs in a calendar year in the T20 format that was held by Pakistan’s Mohammed Rizwan.
The left handed batter achieved this milestone while playing for his team Trinbago Knight Riders against Barbados Royals in the 2024 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) match.
In the match, Nicholas Pooran further enhanced his load of runs accumulated in the league and T20s this year in another notable match as he scored a quick 27 runs off 15 balls including four boundaries and a six over the ropes after coming in as a substitute batsman. He made the runs at a strike rate of 180.00.
With the help off this, couple of good scores from captain Kieron Pollard 42 off 27b, Keacy Carty 32 off 34 b Andre Russell 31 off 12b guided the team to 175/7 which they defended well bowling out the Barbadian batsman for 145/9, even after Alick Athanaze 44 off 33b and David Miller 30 off 15b played well for the team.
In T20s held this year, It has been Pooran’s year yet again as he is leading all run scorers in T20s with a total of 2059 in 66 matches and 65 innings at an average of 42.02 and strike rate of 160.85 with the best score of 98. He has 14 fifties in the year so far. He has hit 139 4s and 152 this year.
In CPL 2024, Pooran has scored 312 runs in nine innings at an average of 39.00, with a strike rate of 175.28 and best score of 97. He already has scored two half centuries in the tournament and is sitting at fourth position in the run getting chart.
In 2021, Rizwan’s record stood at a whopping 2,036 runs scored off 48 T20s with an average of 56.60, strike rate of over 132 and a hundred and 18 fifties. Scored his highest of 104*.
In various T20 leagues and competition this year, Nicholas Pooran has shown some great batting form. He had some great scoring opportunities in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and scored 499 runs with an average of 62.37 including 3 fifties and strike rate of 178.21 and a highest of 75. He was the eight highest run scorer of this season.
In T20 World cup held in USA and west indies, pooran stood 6 th in run scoring making 228 runs off seven innings at an average of 38.00 with fifty and best of 98.
In the International League T20 season this year in UAE, MI Emirates won the title after being led by Pooran who played out of his skin to accumulate the most runs in the tournament, 709 runs in 20 matches at an average of 50.64 with four fifties scored and a strike rate of 155.14, making contributions of 4 half centuries. He was the third highest scorer in the competition.
He contributed well in SA20 2024 South Africa (86 runs in 3 matches with a fifty), Major League Cricket (MLC) about cricket in USA (180 runs in 7 matches with a fifty, average 30.00, strike 125.00), The Hundred cricket in UK (batted in 7 innings and scored 227 runs at an average of 45.40 and strike rate of 150.33 and three fifties which is the fourth most runs scored).
Eve Popson has appeared in 13 T20Is for the West Indies, amassing 384 runs at 34.90 with a strike rate of over 157 and two half-centuries who has a best score of 98.
Previously, in CPL 2024, Pooran surpassed the record for the most sixes in T20 matches by a player in a calendar year, held by windies great Chris Gayle (135), and soon thereafter, became the first-ever player to hit over 150-sixes in a calendar-year.
Pooran’s distant rivals this year in the run-scoring are: South Africa’s Reeza Hendricks (1,5 at average 31,1 over 59 matches including 14 fifties with strike rate bove 128) , 155 runs , Pakistan’s Babard Azam (1,4 80 runs at average 46,25 over 36 matches including 1 hundred, 13 fifties with strike rate of 132.73) and the last one is TRAVIS HEAD (1,442 runs in 39 matches at average 41.20 including 1 century and 13 fifties strike rate 182.07).
