Minister of Civil Aviation Union Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, Airports Adani Group Director Jeet Adani and MoS Murlidhar Mohol during the presentation of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) model at Ulwe in Navi Mumbai, July 13, Saturday, 2024.
“On July 13th, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation said the new international airport in Navi Mumbai would be operational from March 2025”, said Minister Mohol.
The airport, which is under construction currently, has been named after the late Dinkar Balu Patil who was a leader of Peasants and Workers Party of India as per the approval by Maharashtra Government in July 2022.
India’s first general aviation airport located at Juhu and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport would be joined by D.B. Patil International Airport to become the third one in Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Mr. Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu Ministry of Civil Aviation and Mr. Mohol went on an inspection visit to site at Navi Mumbai on July 13; Mr. Mohol told reporters after his tour that “the airport will be operational from March 2025. Construction progress is according to plan.” The construction work is being executed by a contractor company called Navi Mumbai International Airport Private Limited which belongs to Adani Enterprises Limited subsidiary.
Initially, it was planned that it would take two phases for the entire airport to start functioning but later these two stages were merged into single one consistent with second phase deadline now standing at March 2025.
Estimates show that ten million passengers per annum (MPPA) are expected to pass through this terminal from 2019 onwards until they were revised upwards to reach 25 MPPA for year starting from when it was brought up in 2023. Accordingly, projections indicate that this facility will handle 40 MPPA by 2027, and 60 MPPA by 2031.
The foundation stone for this project was laid by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2018 but construction began only in August 2021. There are also some people who have been affected by the work on the project awaiting their compensation. “We ensure that those who have contributed with their land for the project will not remain displaced and will be adequately compensated”, said Mr. Mohol, a Member representing Pune Lok Sabha constituency.
