2019 results and 2024 candidates
Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu is the current MP from Narasaraopet. He won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on YSRCP ticket with a margin of 1,53,978 votes. He recently quit the YSRCP and joined the TDP.
Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu is the TDP candidate in this election, competing against MP Garnepudi Alexandar Sudhakar and Dr Poluboina Anil Kumar Yadav of YSRCP.
who stands where
BJP-TDP-JSP alliance
Former YSRCP leader and current MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu has joined the TDP and will contest the Lok Sabha elections as a TDP candidate. This is a shot in the arm for TDP cadres.
Devarayalu is a popular figure in the constituency with a reputation for helping others and is not controversial. Chief Minister Jagan Reddy, keen on fielding a backward class candidate from the region, dropped Devarayalu.
With his arrival, the TDP-BJP-JSP alliance has increased their chances of winning the election in the constituency.
The TDP has a strong vote bank among the Yadav, Kapu and Malla caste groups. Devarayalu is expected to add his vote bank to the mix and with the lack of opponents of his stature, it may be a piece of cake for him.
The alliance is expected to capitalize on the anti-incumbency campaign against the YSRCP government and highlight the development agenda of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chandrababu Naidu, especially each leader’s record on infrastructure and economic development.
Yangzhou SRCP
YSRCP has Anil Kumar Poluboina aka Anil Kumar Yadav as its candidate. They hope he can cut into the Yadav community, traditionally a Labor voting base. However, reports from the ground indicate that Anil Kumar Yadav may not be a serious contender for Devarayalu.
Anil Kumar Yadav is the current MLA from Nellore Municipal Council constituency, which is 200 km away. The candidate was unpopular with voters and was seen as non-local. This could hurt the YSRCP’s chances in the elections.
According to reports from the ground, despite the YSRCP candidate’s campaign intensifying in coordination with all YSRCP MLAs and Parnadu party leaders, he failed to excite voters, resulting in a faltering campaign.
Yadav’s candidature may also unsettle state health minister Vidadala Rajani, who is also contesting Narasaraopet’s Lok Sabha ticket.
The YSRCP has a loyal voter base among Scheduled Castes (SC), Backward Classes (BC) and minorities, who form a large part of the electorate in the constituency.
indian national congress party
Congress’s influence in this constituency is very low. It did not field a candidate in the last Lok Sabha elections.
Though the entry of Jagan Reddy’s sister YS Sharmila has galvanized the cadre, the party has faced problems in finding strong candidates. Her effects can only be seen at best
A negligible margin in the concurrent parliamentary elections.
other parties
Other political parties and independent candidates are unlikely to pose a significant challenge to the YSRCP or the TDP-BJP alliance. The BSP and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) have also expressed interest in contesting the seat, but these parties have minimal influence in the constituency and are unlikely to have a major impact.
Main constituency issues
farm dilemma
Agriculture is the main source of employment for the people of Narasarapet constituency. Rice is the main crop grown in the region and farmers face challenges such as low crop prices, high input costs and lack of irrigation facilities. Moreover, Andhra Pradesh has the third highest farmer suicide rate in the country.
welfare plan
The welfare schemes of the YSRCP government benefit the poor and socially marginalized groups in Narasaraopet constituency. These plans include Amma Vodi plan which offers Rs. 12,000 per child per year for mothers, Rythu Bharosa scheme for farmers and YSR Pension Kanuka scheme for senior citizens. The TDP-BJP alliance has been criticizing these schemes as unsustainable. The BJP alleged that funds provided by the Center to the state government under the Prime Minister Kisan Insurance Scheme were labeled “Ryhtu Bharosa” by Jagan Reddy. However, voters in the constituency are largely satisfied with the state plan.
financial crisis
The Andhra Pradesh government is facing a financial crisis and the YSRCP’s welfare schemes have saddled the state with huge debts. As a result, state governments received large loans from the central government and other financial institutions. This resulted in a financial crisis that resulted in the loss of supporters of the country and, in particular, development.
Development issues
According to field reports, there have been almost no new developments in the Narasaraopet constituency in recent years. The roads are dilapidated and rotten.
corruption
According to field reports, officials lacked transparency and accountability in implementing welfare programs. The YSRCP government has also been criticized for corruption in land deals in Narasaraopet constituency. Government officials colluded with private developers to facilitate land acquisitions at below-market prices, and the government allegedly turned a blind eye to illegal land acquisitions and encroachments.
political violence
Political violence broke out in Narasarapet, Andhra Pradesh on March 13 this year when supporters of TDP and YSRCP clashed during the visit of TDP MLA candidate Chadalavada Aravinda Babu. This is not the first time that the YSRCP has engaged in political violence against the opposition. In 2023, after YSRCP workers attacked the office building of Eenadu newspaper, TDP chief Naidu had said that Jagan Mohan Reddy was instigating his followers. Narasaraopet imposed Section 144 in June last year when violent clashes broke out between YSRCP and TDP party workers.
infrastructure development
Narasarapet Smart City Project
Chandrababu Naidu has drawn up plans for this ambitious project with a total investment of Rs. 10 billion rupees. The project will include the development of smart roads, smart street lighting and smart water management systems. Although the project was expected to be completed in 2021, the deadline has been missed.
Varikaselipuda Lift Irrigation Project
In November last year, as the elections were approaching, Jagan Reddy launched the Varikapudisela Lift Irrigation Scheme in Macherla. The project is expected to provide drinking water to over 100,000 people and irrigate over 1.25 lakh acres of land in Palnadu. The project has been neglected for years. However, it must be remembered that the foundation stone of the project was laid thrice (1996, 2008 and 2017) before two chief ministers, the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy and N Chandrababu Naidu. Nothing happened.
National Highway 167
The Center has approved the construction of a new national highway, NH 167, which will connect Narasaraopet and Srisailam. This is expected to benefit the locals a lot and will be a plus point for the TDP-BJP alliance.
Railway line upgrades
The central government has also approved the upgrade of the railway line between Narasaraopet and Vijayawada. The Narasaraopet project is still in the planning stage and is expected to be completed in phases. However, doubling of the Guntur-Tenali-Narasaraopet line is expected to be completed soon with electrification.
road upgrades
The state government claims to have upgraded several roads in Narasaraopet constituency, including Narasaraopet-Vijayawada Expressway and Narasaraopet-Guntur Expressway. However, the widespread disrepair of many of the region’s roads will be a hot topic in the election.
Voter Demographics
As per the 2019 election data, Narasaraopet has a total of 16,69,308 voters, of which 12,95,383 (77.6%) are rural voters and 3,73,925 (22.4%) are urban voters.
The number of SC voters in this constituency is 3,07,153 (18.4%) and the number of ST voters is 1,15,182 (6.9%).
Hindu voters account for 86.6% of the total voters, Christians account for 1.84%, and Muslims account for 11.46%.
