The head coach of the women’s cricket team preparing for upcoming Asia Cup in July has been appointed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB); it is none other than Muhammad Wasim who is an ex-Test cricketer and chief selector.
Muhammad Wasim was the chief selector during Ramiz Raja’s reign as PCB Chairman. His coaching staff, according to PTI, includes Junaid Khan and Abdul Rehman, who have been appointed assistant and bowling coaches respectively.
Both Khan and Rehman were test bowlers before joining the coaching staff. This change in the management of the women’s team in white-ball format follows a period of dismal performances that ended with a disappointing series against England.
Pakistan has been grouped with India in Dambulla, Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup which begins on 19th July. The tournament will involve eight teams namely Bangladesh, Nepal, Malaysia, Bhutan and Thailand among others which will battle out for supremacy. Therefore it represents an invaluable opportunity at a continental scale to present their various talents on stage.
PCB initiated a four-day conditioning camp beginning on Wednesday last week ahead of the Asia Cup. The aim here is to ready them physically and mentally for what lies ahead. The selection committee is therefore supposed to announce the squad for next week after completion of this camp.
There are adjustments done in women’s team management together with holding conditioning camp that precedes Asia cup showing that PCB is focused on improving international performance levels of this side. This is clearly demonstrated through these changes indicating how much struggle board wants the national women cricket team to compete favorably especially after setbacks encountered recently.
By selecting experienced people such as Muhammad Wasim, Junaid Khan, Abdul Rehman among others into coaching panel indicates strategic moves by PCB aimed at boosting preparation and performance of this squad come forthcoming Asian Cup.
