Patialana, who has a similar slinging action to Sri Lankan fast bowling legend Lasith Malinga, is currently ranked fifth in the list of the best wicket-takers in the IPL this season, having scored in 6 games 13 wickets.
He attributes this success to the confidence shown in him by Dhoni, who handed over the CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of IPL 2024.

“After my father, in my cricketing life, he (Dhoni) played the role of my father most of the time because he always looked after me, gave me advice, told me what I had to do, like I’m the same father I am at home,” Pathirana said on the latest episode of Lions Upclose.
Patialana further revealed that Dhoni doesn’t talk much and always emphasizes on enjoying the game and taking care of his body.
“He doesn’t tell me a lot of things when I’m on the court and off the court. He just tells me little things that make a big difference. So those little things, I get a lot out of those little things. Big confidence,” said the 21-year-old Sri Lankan pacer.

“Off the court, we don’t talk much; but if I have to ask him for something, I will definitely go to him and ask. Every time he tells me ‘enjoy your game and take care of your body’.”
The pacer from Trinity College Kandy then quietly made the request which is on every CSK fan’s wish list.
“Mahi bhai, if you can play another season, please play with us. If I were here (laughs).”
