Vinesh Phogat, a wrestler was highly praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for her great job at the Olympic Games in Paris and for being the first Indian female grappler to reach final bouts.
On Independence Day, according to IANS report, The Head of State held a meeting and a reception with Indian athletes and gold winners from the just ended Paris Olympics at his house located at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg in the capital city.
From Paris Olympics team India, PM Narendra Modi acknowledged Vinesh’s triumphs stating “Vinesh became the first Indian (women) to reach the finals in wrestling which is a matter of great pride for all of us”.
However, on morning of the championship match when it turned out that Vinesh was overweight by 100 grams allowed weight restriction, she was disqualified from women’s 50 kg gold medal contest at Olympic games in Paris.
In social media post after this traumatic incident, Vinesh announced her retirement from wrestling.
She appealed to Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) against her disqualification from Olympics seeking shared silver medal in weight category 50 kg.
However, her appeal against disqualification was rejected by CAS’ Ad-Hoc Division thus dashing Vinesh’s hopes of winning her first ever Olympic medal.
