After Democratic operatives and Kamala Harris focus of attention, the next concern is who she will choose as her running mate with the party mainstream appearing to back her.
Party activists, supporters are naming six governors of Democrat-run states, a few lawmakers, and cabinet officials among others on the short list.
These include Governors Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan and Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania whose states are possible battlegrounds that could help deliver 270 electoral votes for Harris in her bid for White House.
Similarly, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Senator Harris’ counterpart in politics from this state Illinois Governor JD Pritzker and Andy Beshear the Democratic governor of Kentucky which has been consistently voting Republican.
However, it would be unlikely for Democrats to lose California or Illinois or win Kentucky; therefore they are thought to be less likely as well as Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan given that having two women on one ticket is unthinkable in a country which has not yet elected a woman as president.
For similar reasons Pete Buttigieg’s Transportation Secretary is another name being bandied about: US is perceived as not ready for Black-Asian woman for Presidency and a gay mid-western man for vice-presidency – it’s very unlikely.
Another name going around is Mark Kelly former astronaut and senator from Arizona. Arizona happens to be a toss-up state too.
Obviously feminist or fantasy enthusiasts throw up Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey occasionally but no serious political commentator takes these suggestions seriously.
