India’s newly appointed T20 captain Surkumar Yadav has said that he does not want to repeat the mistakes he made during his previous domestic captaincy period as India prepare to face Sri Lanka for the first time under his leadership.
Rohit Sharma, 33 years old, relinquished his position, and Suryakumar replaced him after he quit this format in July following India’s victorious World Cup campaign.
However, Hardik Pandya faced competition from the all-rounder for the role of captain with concerns about Pandya’s injury problems playing a part in his appointment.
Nevertheless, Suryakumar’s stint with Mumbai state had raised eyebrows since he was dismissed for being complained against by his colleagues five years ago.
“Since then a lot has changed. I am not the same person anymore,” Parami News quoted Suryakumar as saying to reporters ahead of Saturday’s series opener in Kandy.
“I have got marry and learnt so much from other captains. They will have my own way to take the team forward,” He added.
“Our brand of cricket remains the same. What has changed is that now I’m captaining it,”
When it comes to batting Virat Kohli’s decision to step down from T20 captaincy came at a time when he was one of India’a top performing batsmen. This will enable Suryakumar to experiment with different strategies in batting order because opening batsmen Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal are behind him in these positions.
Sri Lanka also have new short-format leaders following their early exit from WC which resulted into resignation of Wanindu Hasaranga six months after taking over.
Charith Asalanka who is now captain led Jaffna Kings to victory in Lanka Premier League tournament a 20-over competition held on Sunday
“It is a massive challenge for us competing against world champions but we are prepared well ready for the challenge ahead,” said Asalanka.
“Bit disappointed that we are not at full strength. We have lost some of our pace due to injury and illness,” he added.
Sri Lanka’s fast bowling department has bee hit hard by recent disappointments as Nuwan Thushara fractured a thumb ruling him out for the rest of series, while Dushmantha Chameera is sick and will not be able to participate in it.
To cover for these absences, Sri Lankan team has called up Asitha Fernando and Dilshan Madushanka who are right-arm seam bowler and left-arm fast bowler respectively, replacing injured or unwell players.
The ongoing three-match series comes to an end on Tuesday in Kandy. After this the teams will move into a three-match ODI series that gets underway on Friday in Colombo.
