Secretary of Indian cricket board Jay Shah made history on Tuesday by becoming the youngest Independent Chairman in the history of the International Cricket Council (ICC). This was the case as Shah, who is 35, faced no right competition in the election after current chairman Greg Barclay withdrew from contesting for a third term in office.
He becomes the fifth Indian to achieve this premium status after Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar. “I am humbled by the nomination as the ICC Chair,” Shah said. He will have to resign his position as secretary of BCCI before accepting the ICC appointment.
Shah, who also serves as president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), will take his position on the ICC on 1st December. Three terms of office of two years each, so a total of six calendar years are allowed for any person who gets tagged as an ICC chairman, and Mr. Barclay, a foreign qualified attorney based in New Zealand, has done this for four terms.
Meanwhile the ICC had earlier made clear it would only fill the chairman’s post if more than one person put themselves forward to be elected. But that was not the case as Jay Shah was the only person nominated for the position meaning that there was no need for an election.
Exhibiting a great deal of attraction to Jay Shah, over 100 member countries of the ICC took part in the annual conference of ICC held in colombo in July.
“The election of Shah heralds the beginning of a new phase in the ICC’s attempts to further promote the game and to advance it’s progress in the world,” stated the council in its release.
While it still plans to suspend blames activity, regarding facts concerning the members of a parliamentary party. The Board of Control has two sets of rules as regards its chairman and management. He is into his second term as BCCI secretary after being first elected in October 2019. Furthermore, by the CBI constitution, Shah had to go into an obligatory cooling off period next year in CBI.
I had cited Shah, Vice-President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), who chairs the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee, has high hopes of: assuming participation in organisation of this tournament O. CoG 2028 ‘jpry’ CBI Main Goal. Saying, I will campaign hard for the inclusion of cricket into the Olympics, especially los angeles 2028, since I am president in 2019 Cb, cit.
Shah also talked about the necessity of pondering in which way all forms of the game can be around.
“Currently, we are at a crossroads and it has become increasingly crucial to ensure, on the one hand, the feasibility of such coexistence of several formats, and, on the other, overcome the barriers imposed by the organized cricket and unveil our flagship events in the new global markets. He asserted, ‘We are aspiring to make further advances as it comes to cricket and including its popularity within the borders of our country.’”
Looking at the BCCI, one may argue that the discussion to identify a suitable candidate to succeed Shah will conclude in October. Among the current lot of office bearers, there is a stiff competition between treasurer Ashish Shelar and joint secretary Devajit Saikia.
It would be fascinating to find out whether BCCI treasurer we have Arun Dhumal current IPL chairman would be considered for the post. It would be a difficult job looking at the sky-high expectations with the IPL mega auction round the corner. Information is rife that Rohan Jaitley, the current president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association, will run for the position.
It depends on whether the board chooses to bring in a new person for the post or enhances one of its existing office bearers.
“Only tagged äría blúster these calls are.when all board members plus other important persons in Indian cricket are together. At the last moment, things changes in BCCI, Nothing can be said till then,” said a senior BCCI office-bearer to Parami.
Son of India’s home minister and having been in the realm of cricket administrative leadership since 2009 when he was part of a district body in Gujarat, subsequently joint secretary to the Gujarat Cricket Association GCA in 2013. Replaced the BCCI first he was still with president Sourav Ganguly at the helm ofaji cricket board that was emerging from stormy cubby’s accusation of being managed by mid-level orders.
His term at GCA, which included the construction of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, proved useful when the covid 19 outbreak hit during his term as secretary to the BCCI.
The ice had already broken with Jake Hill organizing a successful edition of the IPL in the UAE in 2020 and ICC T20 World Cup in the same country in 2021. Another highlight of his stay with the BCCI included media rights auction pertaining to the IPL held in 2022 and received substantial prizes, more likely due to commercialization of cricket. Shah lead the talks and in the end, the companies paid a whopping Rs 48,390 crores for five years period.
Over the last one year, Jay Shah has been active in promoting women’s cricket in India as BCCI implemented pay parity for its international cricketers and increased the matches fee of all domestic male and female cricketers. He was an important figure in the establishment of the Women’s Premier League WPL in 2022.
SViSGy 116 with more distractions, hoped to set up on the large piece of land acquired by the BCCI in 2008, drew on the building of the new National Cricket Academy NCA in Bangalore. Recently, Shah said that there are various aspects of cricket that need focus such as cricket for the disabled.
Now, as chair of the ICC, his very first hurdle is to unearth the incompetently handled T20 World Cup held in USA and West Indies a couple of months back. He has been very cautious with the over-the-top budget used for the USA leg and has been the first one to lift the red flag as ICCs F and CAC head.
