NEW DELHI: India spinner Kuldeep Yadav respects the decision of Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, and Virat Kohli to retire from T20I cricket, viewing it as a “personal” choice. He believes that their departure will create opportunities for young players to step up and make their mark in the shortest format of the game.
The T20 World Cup final was an emotional rollercoaster for Indian cricket fans.On one hand, they celebrated the end of India’s 11-year ICC title drought, while on the other, they mourned the retirement of three iconic players from the T20I format.
In his retirement announcement, Kohli expressed his belief that it was time for him to pass the baton on to the younger generation, signaling a new era in Indian cricket.
Sharing similar views about giving an opportunity to the younger generation, Kuldeep told ANI, “It is their personal decision. They have achieved a lot for India. I hope that youngsters will get good opportunities. They announced their retirement after winning the T20 World Cup and there is no better achievement than that.”
In a tense and thrilling encounter, India found themselves in an unusual predicament as the required run rate for South Africa dwindled to a mere six runs per over. The Proteas were in striking distance of the trophy, needing only 30 runs off the last five overs.
Nevertheless, India’s formidable pace attack, consisting of Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya, made the South African batsmen toil for every single run. The trio bowled with precision and discipline, making scoring increasingly difficult.
The Indian team’s determination and the bowlers’ exceptional performance under pressure ultimately led to a hard-fought victory, breaking the nearly two-decade-long title drought in the T20 World Cup.
“It was a good approach. We were desperate to win the World Cup. We achieved what we wanted to,” Kuldeep added.
