On Day 3 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Shubman Gill, a young Indian batter, was able to achieve the milestone of five Test centuries after batting in the third position. Gill made an unbeaten 119 off 176 balls to help India declare their second innings at 287 for the loss of four wickets, thereby setting the visitors the target of 515 runs on limited overs cricket on Saturday.
His first innings was almost one of those who witnessed a batting horror story in real time because he was out for a golden duck while in the second innings it felt like redemption. A nudge off Mehidy Hasan Miraz-completing a single saw to it that the Gill reached the elusive century.
In 35 matches played at this ground, Shubman Gill has had to only wait for Dravid to become only the second Indian No.3 batsman to score a century in Tests at this ground.
He scored 78 runs up hitting 10 fours and 4 sixes and shared a mammoth 167 runs partnership with Rishabh Pant. Pant was playing his first Abrahamic Test match after almost 2 years and he also registered a century not losing out on the record for the most test centuries for a keeper batter in India of MS Dhoni.
After scoring a second innings duck, Gill also became the first batter to score a century against Bangladesh in the second innings.
Reaching the century has made his name hang alongside the elite only Rahul Dravid becomes the other Indian No.3 batsman at this venue to do so. As India is in a terrific position, Gill’s contribution may very well be important to help the team achieve victory.
