New York: Congress passes a resolution United Nations overwhelmingly supports Palestine’s formal membership and urges security council According to CNN, in order to give the bid “favorable consideration.”
Friday’s resolution received an absolute majority of 143 votes, including from India. 25 countries abstained from voting, and 9 countries including Israel and the United States voted against.
Other countries that voted against the resolution were: Czech Republic, Hungary, Argentina, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea and
The text proposed by the United Arab Emirates gives the Palestinian Authority new privileges currently granted as a non-member observer state and calls on the UN Security Council “to reconsider the matter, which must rule on Palestine’s membership”.
“It is eligible for Statehood Membership with its flag flying high over our homeland,” it stated.
More importantly India has always reincarnated itself as a permanent player in regard to two-state solution within Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While New Delhi condemned any terrorist attacks such as those occurring on October 7 by Hamas it also calls upon Palestinians to claim their homeland.
In February The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated this position during parliamentary debates: “We are confident that a negotiated two state solution will see through establishment of one sovereign independent viable Palestinian state within secure recognized borders living side by side with Israel.”
Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour detailed the plight of Palestinians in war-torn Gaza Strip ahead of Friday’s vote.
According to CNN he said on meeting before Friday that “as I am talking now there are 1.4 million people in Rafah who want to know if they will survive today” when referring to threats made by Israel against Huge air raids against densely populated cities located southwards of Gaza.
At the same time he thanked protestors at American universities and beyond America for demonstrating against Israel’s battle with Hamas terror group.
“The flag standing tall above our country as well as all around globe or even in Columbia University’s campus has turned to be a symbol for all of us who believe in equal rights and freedom and the ones who cannot condone such total injustice anymore,” Mansour commented.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz quickly condemned the passage of the resolution, calling it a “ridiculous decision” that highlighted “the structural bias of the United Nations” and rewarded Hamas for its actions on October 7.
“The message here is that violence eventually pays off,” he said. “This decision by the UN to elevate the status of Palestinians is an awarding ceremony to Hamas terrorists, who carried out the largest massacre of Jews since Holocaust.”
It should be noted that although General Assembly According to CNN, this vote does not confer membership in the United Nations but the approved resolution does give Palestine new privileges. They can now take their place among member states in alphabetical order, submit proposals and amendments as well as co-sponsor them.
It also has speaking rights and can make statements about voting decisions. It has representative powers within specific sections of UN meetings: group responses. The request may also include proposals for consideration or inclusion on an item into GA provisional agenda.
The Palestinian Authority will further demand full Security Council membership, Mansour added
However, the United States has warned it may exercise its veto power at the Security Council – a replay of its refusal of an earlier Palestinian request for membership in April.
Following the vote in the General Assembly on Friday, Robert Wood, US Deputy Ambassador to UN, was quoted as having referred to the resolution text as being ‘unproductive’ and stating that “enduring peace” requires incorporating a two-state solution into other frameworks. By CNN News Network newspaper.
“Gaza must not be used as a platform for terrorism; Israel should avoid reoccupying Gaza; and the size of Gaza’s territory must never be reduced,” he said.
Wood also added that Palestine’s statehood could not be deliberated upon by UN since “the US still believes that direct negotiations between Israel and Palestine are the quickest way for the Palestinians to obtain statehood and join UN.”
