On the second day of the current one-day Test against South Africa, the Indian women’s cricket team achieved an extraordinary accomplishment. The ladies’ cricket team established a new record with a team total that was higher than any other in the history of women’s test cricket; this surpassed Australia’s 575/9 set early this year at Perth.
Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana’s opening partnership constituted India’s record-breaking total. They opened by producing a century stand together, which is still the highest partnership for India in women’s tests till now. Verma scored an incredible 205 runs while Mandhana contributed solidly with 149 runs that went on to make up the huge total.
The South African bowlers were unable to stop Jemimah Rodrigues from adding fifty-five important runs to India’s dominance with the bat. The innings of Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh batting third for their team ended unbeaten respectively after passing through fifty-three runs each.
On Day One of that particular Test match, India had already made a world record as they had surpassed Sri Lanka men team’s highest ever single day total in Tests. Their score surpassed the previous best made by Sri Lankan men side who managed 509-9 versus Bangladesh at Colombo in 2002 when Indians accounted for 525-4.
This great achievement shows that Indian female cricketers are great batters both locally and internationally and it also proves how competitive Women Cricket has become recently, with more attention being paid to its growth.
Though some individual performances played crucial roles in achieving this feat, it was through collective effort throughout their batting squad that they could achieve such record-breaking figures. They showed determination, skills and focus as they patiently built up their innings run by run capitalizing on every opportunity provided by South African bowlers.
