Beau Webster is set to to become Australia’s 469th Test cricketer. He will make his debut against India in the fifth Border-Gavaskar Trophy match in Sydney on Friday. Captain Pat Cummins confirmed Webster’s inclusion in the playing XI on Thursday. He will replace Mitchell Marsh.
Australia currently lead the five-match series 2-1. The hosts aim to secure the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the final match.
Webster’s selection provides a like-for-like replacement for Marsh and is expected to bat at number six.
“Mitchy obviously hasn’t quite got the runs or perhaps the wickets this series, so we felt it was time for a freshen up, and Beau’s been great,” Cummins said on the eve of the Test.
Who is Beau Webster?
The 31-year-old Webster made his First-Class debut for Tasmania in 2014. He has experience batting in various positions, from opening to number seven.
Webster began his career as a finger spinner. He transitioned to seam bowling in 2021.
Since the start of the 2022/23 season, the 6’5″ all-rounder has scored 1,837 runs. His average during this period is 51.01.
Webster generally bowls first change for Tasmania. He has taken 39 wickets since the beginning of last season.
He was also awarded Sheffield Shield Player of the Season.
Webster’s overall First-Class career spans 93 matches. He has accumulated 5,297 runs, including 12 centuries, at an average of nearly 38. His red-ball bowling record shows 148 wickets taken at an average of 37.39.
In November, Webster played for Australia A against India A. During this tour, he scored 145 runs and took seven wickets in two four-day matches.
