The devastating loss of the recent ODI series against Sri Lanka by India has triggered a lot of analysis and introspection. Captain Rohit Sharma, known for his frank assessments, provided some useful insights into the team’s performance, outlining several areas that need to be addressed.
Sharma noted the recurring spin bowling problem that were their hallmark during these last outings. “We have to think which players can play on these type of tracks but also, you have to give consistent chances as it’s not easy to perform in one or two chances. It was just a bad series and we need to accept it”, said Rohit after losing.
Although he admitted that conditions made batting difficult, Sharma emphasized personal responsibility and the ability to adjust.
“We need to agree exactly where all went wrong. We couldn’t show more intent and aggression against spinners, they put pressure relentlessly on us. This is about individual plans. We’ve had this before where there is little bit of turn in the ball. I can see guys working hard in nets and trying different shots but we should know how we keep momentum. We lost three times out of five games played. I’d say we could have won that first game which resulted into a tie,” he pointed out.
The lack of momentum together with relentless pressure from the spinners was what ultimately led them down in all three instances.
Indian captain hinted at possible changes in personnel based on adaptability towards specific conditions while underscoring the importance of providing regular opportunities for growth thus indicating that players who prove themselves in challenging environments will be preferred.
“We are aware of our problems We’ll let players know this is what we want if you’re going to change personnel or operate differently.” He added
Sharma’s analysis did not contain any excuses but rather an acknowledgment of reality with him saying; “I don’t really think throughout whole series we were brave enough hence we trailed behind throughout. We shall address those things.”
