Congress president Mallikarjun Haq on Sunday asked people to vote for his party, claiming that a third term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah would mean poor, Dalits and tribals will be “treated like slaves”.
Addressing a rally in Maharashtra’s Dhule constituency, where the Congress fielded former MP Shobha Bachhav, Khargah appealed to voters to save democracy and the constitution by choosing his party.
“Before independence, poor people, Dalits and tribal people were treated like slaves. If Modi and Shah are elected for a third term, the same situation will happen again. We will become slaves again,” he said.
Dhule in northern Maharashtra will vote for the fifth phase of general elections on May 20.
“You have to vote for yourself and your own people. We need to save the Constitution. This election will shape the future of the country, so it’s an important election.
If there is no constitution, “no one can save you”, he said, claiming that “RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had said in 2015 that the constitution should be amended”. Later, many BJP MPs and saffron party leaders also issued similar statements, he said.
Haq also accused Prime Minister Modi of “spreading lies”.
Haq said Modi had loudly promised to bring back black money from abroad but never fulfilled this promise.
“He claimed to provide 20 million jobs every year, but never did it. According to him, his wrong policies not only failed to increase the income of farmers, but increased the production costs of growers. This is why Modi should step down, ” Hager added.
