Leadership changes are presently occurring at the International Cricket Council (ICC) as Indra Nooyi’s tenure comes to an end as the first woman independent director and also a chairman election is being held.
Nooyi, who was former head of PepsiCo, completed her six-year term last month and this meant that it was indeed an important milestone for ICC.
Her appointment in 2018 marked a breakthrough moment for diversity and inclusion within the organization at its highest level.
The ICC Board continues to look out for someone who will be able to influence others just like Nooyi. While the guiding principles remain open-ended, a suitable candidate should have an influential businesswoman with demonstrated achievements either in corporate circles or sports field.
In addition, other possible candidates may include cricket greats such as Meg Lanning or Charlotte Edwards or tycoons from different industries.
The ICC constitution demands that one female independent director must be appointed to guarantee representation and equality in the sport.
As a starting point, this person will serve for two years only after being chosen by board of directors through nominations committee shortlisting process.
It is noteworthy that during election of chairman, voting power is given to the independent director indicating how important this position is in shaping future direction of ICC.
This has necessitated the search for new chairperson following Greg Barclay’s decision not to contest for another term. This further underlines what a big transitional phase we are in at present within ICC.
Cricketing fraternity worldwide will therefore be keenly watching both vacancies’ filling process due their huge impact on global cricket governance and future trends.
