On Friday in Colombo, the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Annual Conference opened and marked beginning of a number of important meetings and elections that would take place.
The opening day was made up of an assembly of Associate Members, Non-voting Associate Members and Regional Representatives. The election of Associate Member Directors is one such event that is critical on the agenda.
In this election, Mubashshir Usmani, Imran Khawaja, Mahinda Vallipuram came out victorious with 23 votes; 20 votes; and 13 votes respectively while Usmani being also among the ICC’s Chief Executive Committee members played a key role in setting up ILT20 in UAE.
Pankaj Khimji, who had been an associate member director lost his position after getting just seven votes.
During this election eleven candidates contested for these three directors’ posts which are elected through a ballot system covering all voting from both Associate Members and Regional Representatives for its period is two years only.
Traditionally, the associate director who gains most votes becomes the ICC vice chairman. It could be possible for Usmani to follow this trend as he may occupy that post soon.
The AGM (Annual General Meeting) ICC continues with more vital resolutions and deliberations scheduled between July 19-22 at Colombo.
