DELAWERE: Hunter Biden’s criminal trial began in the federal court of Washington on Monday, after Prez Joe Biden’s son was charged with possession of a firearm, marking it as an unprecedented case that comes just days after Donald Trump became the first former US president to be found guilty.
The 54-year-old son of the sitting president appeared at his own trial for which he is facing three felony counts related to his purchase and possession of a handgun in 2018. His plea is “not guilty”. This is one out of two fraud cases brought against him with separate federal tax charges initiated in California. First Lady Jill Biden, Melissa Cohen Biden- Hunter’s wife and half-sister Ashley Biden were present during proceedings at Wilmington District Court before U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika. “Jill and I love our son and we are so proud of the man he is today,” Joe Biden said in a statement adding that many other families see their loved ones overcome addiction.
In New York State Supreme Court Thursday, Trump was convicted by a jury on thirty-four felony charges of fabricating documentation to conceal payoffs to a pornographic actress to prevent a sex scandal shortly before 2016 United States election that led him to occupy Oval Office.
Hunter’s trial provides Republicans an occasion to turn around from Trump’s legal complications. Sentencing will occur on July 11 for Trump. However, there are three additional pending criminal lawsuits where he denies all accusations.
Last September, in another case filed by Trump’s Special Counsel David Weiss, Hunter was accused for having lied about his drug use when purchasing Colt Cobra. 38-caliber revolver as well as unlawfully keeping this weapon between October 1-11. In addition, Weiss also filed tax evasion charges since he started his investigation against Hunter back in 2019. If proven guilty on all counts contained within Delaware case indictment, Hunter could spend up to twenty-five years behind bars, though defendants are usually sentenced to less time according to the Department of Justice.
Noreika began questioning potential jurors on their readiness for this long trial that most likely will stretch until the next week’s end.
