The Israeli airstrike that killed Hassan Nasrallah recent confirmation of the Hezbollah leader’s death is something that changes the status quo for the Iran-based Lebanese militant group since its inception 32 years ago. In fact, most analysts have suggested that the assassination of Nasrallah is going to create a heavy toll on the operations of Hezbollah, making the task of searching for a proper replacement even harder than it already seems to be.
Herzi Halevi, Israel’s chief of staff, stated that the assassination of Nasrallah was not a spontaneous act that stemmed from professional impulse but was premeditated, which indicates that the war against Hezbollah will continue.
Challenge of succession.
In as much as every member of Hezbollah would love to see Nasrallah remain in power and glory, the fight to choose who will replace him should he lose the Zewavoy will be cut out for any new leader claiming to be addressing self-determination in Israel first – some may even have superior tools than him.
As per the reports from the Times of Israel, Nasrallah’s death is causing panic within Hezbollah and Hashem Safieddine is being touted as the next in line. A first cousin of the deceased Nasrallah, Safieddine is said to be handling the political activities of Hezbollah and is also a member of the Jihad Council of the group.
Nevertheless, the US Department of State labeled Safieddine as a terrorist in the year 2017 and he has expressed extreme view against Israel in the past claiming action would be taken by Hezbollah after the death of other senior leaders.
