Gautam Gambhir was appointed as India’s head coach, a position he holds up to now. Suryakumar Yadav and his team enjoyed a great start to begin their tenure when they thrashed Sri Lanka 3-0 in the three-match T20I series. Nevertheless, it didn’t take long for Gambhir’s high hopes to turn into disappointment when the Islanders made a comeback by winning the two one-day internationals.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are among top Indian batsmen who were not able to do much on a turning Colombo pitch in which ODI matches took place.
According to former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa, Rahul Dravid left big shoes behind after stepping down as head coach and newly appointed Gautam Gambhir has got a difficult task ahead of him. However, he is optimistic that the reigning champions of T20 cricket will still be dominant under him.
“He is someone who always thrives on pressure and has consistently chased big stages to deliver. As far as I am concerned, he has those leadership qualities,” Uthappa said during an interview with paraminews.com.
“Major opportunities will be sought after by him [Gambhir] and he would try everything possible to grab them. He can create an environment for people to flourish as well; this is something that I can vouch for from my experience with him as our captain,” added Uthappa. “That’s the type of leader he is—more than just an excellent skipper himself, he is also outstanding at making strategies and leading people. His group values success.”
“Uthappa stated that Gautam Gambhir provides psychological security for his players.” India will face Bangladesh next in a series starting from 19th September with two Test matches and three T20Is on the schedule against Bangladesh next.
