On Wednesday, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) appointed ex-captain Faruque Ahmed as president after his close friend Sheikh Hasina’s prime leadership departure.
Politics and cricket are closely linked in Bangladesh; thus, the current turmoil in the country has made an impact on sports.
Nazmul sent his resignation letter to BCB, says Nizam Uddin Chowdhury, CEO of the board.
“He had asked for it,” he said.
More than 450 deaths resulted from a month of student-led protests against Hasina’s government. Before she stood down as Prime Minister on August 5th and left the country.
According to Chowdhury, Faruque “took charge immediately” after being selected by the board members.
Nazmul has been serving as BCB President since 2012 though his latest term will end in 2025 AD.
Faruque played seven one-day internationals and captained Bangladesh temporarily at the ICC Trophy held in Kenya in 1994.
He announced that he would retire from international side after World Cup of 1999.
Additionally, between 2005 and 2014, he was also national chief selector.
