Jasprit Bumrah, India’s key pacer as well as one of the star players, was the vice-captain in the Test series against England earlier this year, But Bumrah will not be the vice-captain in the first Test against Bangladesh. There is a strategic and limited use of Bumrah as a vice-skipper. He is still a member of the squad but will play like in the bygone days as a team player instead of being the vice-skipper of bumrah.
Jasprit Bumrah is part of the core group of the team and is seen with leadership abilities alongside KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Virat Kohli. Whereas Kohli has retired from all forms of leadership, he has not ruled out any possibilities from Rahul and Pant for future Test captains. Only intriguing is the lack of any designation of vice captaincy in the team for the Bangladesh series.
There was no requirement for influences like vice captaincy cemented for Bumrah which implies that even in the plans of BCCI and team management, he does not figure as the captain going forward. This is rather a result of the need to manage him, more so his workload.
Jasprit Bumrah has assumed the role of a captain for India on prior occasions, particularly during the rescheduled 2022 Test match between India and England and the 2023 match against Ireland where he successfully lead the team. However, with a captain, constant availability is important and there’s a possibility that Bumrah’s injury history will limit that.
Under Gautam Gambhir’s regime as head coach, there has been a change in the Indian cricket team’s vice-held captaincy. In the case of T20Is, Suryakumar Yadav replaced Hardik Pandya while Shubman Gill has taken up the vice captain’s duties in both ODIs and T20Is, making it as such, where will they fit him in Test cricket really.
The first Test match between India and Bangladesh will take place at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on 19th September and from 27th September second Test frame against Bangladesh will commence at Green Park Stadium Kanpur.
Squad of India First Test 1st Test against Bangladesh is as follows:
