The Paris Olympics have had a very sad moment for the Indian team as Phogat, Vinesh was disqualified from the women’s 50 kg match after being caught with 100g of excess weight before her gold-medal clash against Hildebrandt Sarah of USA on Wednesday.
In the final standings, Vinesh will come last in her event and she won’t be able to medal due to this disqualification.
WHO WILL WIN GOLD, SILVER, BRONZE
Vinesh beat Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semifinal and he was replaced by Lopez during a gold medal match because of such disqualification.
“Vinesh failed second day weigh-in. According to Article 11 of International Wrestling Rules, Vinesh must be substituted by her semi-final contender. Thus Yusneylis Guzman Lopez is going to participate in it,” the organizing committee said in their statement.
On Vinesh’s half of draw for women’s freestyle (50kg) “repechage Yui Susaki (Japan) vs Oksana Livach (Ukraine) will become a bronze-medal match.” The other semifinal from which Sarah made it into the final will have its second bronze-medal contest unchanged.
This has been confirmed by a statement released by Indian Olympic Association: “It is with regret that we inform you about disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from Women’s Wrestling 50kg category at Tokyo2020. Despite tireless efforts all night through, she weighed slightly over 50kg this morning. We shall not make any further comments at this point.
