On Tuesday there was a strong earthquake which measured 5.9 on the Richter scale in the Banda Sea off the coast of Darwin, Australia. The seismic event had a depth of 62 km.
Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology said: “No tsunami threat to Australia.” From people who felt the shock waves, Geoscience Australia received over two hundred and ninety reports.
This came after smaller earthquakes happened earlier in the day, including one with magnitude 3.0 that jolted Gippsland area at approximately 7:54 pm. The Sandy Point area was hit hardest by this quake near Wilsons Promontory approximately 190 km south-east of Melbourne.
