According to the New York Times, Queen Elizabeth II thought Donald Trump and his family were “gracious” and wonderful guests even as some sources said she believed he was “very rude.”
Conflicting Charges Ahead of a Biography
The claim is diametrically opposed with the allegation in Craig Brown’s next book, A Voyage Around the Queen which claims that during their meetings, she told her staff members about her irritation with him.
Past Aide Denies Accusations
An individual who used to be close to where the Queen stood on these matters has denied these allegations. This person said on condition of anonymity, “I know this to be a lie firsthand.” “Moreover, they added that I am not just going by hearsay here; I spoke to the Queen after their visit and post-visit.”
State Visits and Breaches of Etiquette by Trump
During his four-year tenure as President of United States, Trump visited Britain twice. In July 2018 he made an official visit which included a working trip while in June 2019 there was another state visit. During his stay at Buckingham Palace for the state banquet trump had brought along his wife Melania as well as four out of five children Ivanka, Donald Jr., Eric and Tiffany. This was supported by one former staffer who explained: ‘They are lovely people. They’re really nice people.’
Brown wrote that during a private lunch, the queen made it clear what her opinions were on current Republican presidential candidate. For example Brown writes in his new book: “She confided in one lunch guest a few weeks after President Trump’s visit she found him very rude particularly disliked how he kept looking past her shoulder like looking for someone else more interesting.”
Trump’s Marriage Allegations
In this book, Brown also states that The Queen had strong opinions about President Trump’s marriage when she said “he must have something going on with Melania… why would she still be with him?”
The former aide dismissed these claims, stating, “She was always very careful in those private lunches that she had… It doesn’t sound right. As someone who worked for her, it’s not the sort of thing she’d say.”
What the Queen Truly Thought
This is a contradiction to what I personally remember her telling me at the time about their visit and just how everything went down. To be honest, I find this hard to believe because it wasn’t like her. She was so opaque on certain things deliberately. She could not bear being see as intolerant and people would think their own thoughts at least.
Similarly, another source said: “I cannot dispute most of it having worked closely with her over more than three years.”
Trump’s Protocol Breaks While Visiting
His visits were marked by several instances where Trump did not observe royal protocol correctly. For example in Windsor Castle within July 2018 he passed in front of The Queen. While inspecting the Guard of Honour. Additionally when they were having a state banquet at Buckingham Palace in June 2019. Trump hold on to Queen Elizabeth’s back which is against protocol too.
According to the royal family’s website, there are “no obligatory codes of behavior. When meeting the Queen or a member of the royal family”. However, men are expect to bow their necks and women should curtsy.
Queen’s hospitality principle
These were some events that made the source at the palace recollect that. “I remember someone once asking her about the protocol for a particular person on a different state visit. She expressed very clearly that her interest was to be the best host she could be and to make our guest feel comfortable.”
In line with this, one source also stated, “Her aim was not to create a sense of obligation within others but instead. She wanted them to relax and welcome one another. This would have bee absolutely all she cared about as he reviewed those troops; Trump being right over there at that time. The book seems to misunderstand her philosophy and attitude towards these types of visits.”
Gifts; last comments
While on an official visit, President Trump received from Her Majesty. An abridged first edition of Winston Churchill’s book on World War II and Melania was given by her. “A specially commissioned silver box” having a “handcrafted enamel lid”. Which matched with ceiling murals in Buckingham Palace’s music room.
Trump made remarks after their meeting when he told his audience during his interview that. “I have such a great relationship, and we were laughing and having fun. And her people said she hasn’t had so much fun in 25 years.”
Steven Cheung, communications director for Donald Trump spoke about Brown’s book saying. “This is nothing more than fake news intended to use made-up salacious fabrications in order to sell copies of a book that belongs in the bargain bin of the fiction section.”
