The hunt for the new India head coach is already on following Rahul Dravid’s departure as coach after the T20 World Cup in June, with the BCCI’s interest reportedly leaning towards Kolkata Knight Riders’ mentor and former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir. However, a post on X last Thursday by Sourav Ganguly appeared to have indirectly suggested to the BCCI that they should “choose…wisely.”
“The importance of the coach in life, his/her instructions and unending courses are essential for shaping an individual’s future both on and off the pitch. So choose your coaches and institutions wisely…”Ganguly wrote on ‘X’.Since guiding KKR to a third IPL title, there has been growing speculation that Gambhir could replace Dravid. The Kolkata franchise had previously won two titles under Gambhir in 2012 and 2014 respectively. Prior to this season, he returned to KKR as a mentor having served in a similar capacity at Lucknow Super Giants and this move proved crucial for KKR during their victorious campaign.
Monday (May 28) was the deadline for submission of applications for Team India’s head coach job, while Jay Shah met with Gambhir after winning the KKR title further fueling speculations.
According to a recent report from Cricbuzz it is almost certain that Gambhir will be given the position, and there are many negotiations going on.
“A prominent IPL team owner who is close to top BCCI officials revealed that Gambhir has been signed up and an announcement will be made soon; high profile commentator in touch with BCCI also said efforts are being made get Gambhir involved as well; nevertheless, sources within believe discussions are ongoing between both parties as well as possibly others too,” read part of the report. The board secretary denied reports suggesting Ricky Ponting or Justin Langer had been approached by them.
“I did not approach any Australian former cricketer nor has BCCI approached any Australian cricketer for the coaching position. The reports appearing in sections of the media are absolutely baseless,” Shah said.
