Chenoa Nickerson, a 33-year-old Gilbert, Arizona woman is reported to have gone missing since last Thursday after being swept away by flash flood waters at the Grand Canyon National Park (ABC News).
The search and rescue mission is ongoing for her since she was taken in by Havasu Creek around 1:30 pm yesterday afternoon local time. According to NPS, these floods have caused several hikers to become trapped in the area.
On Friday, the NPS announced that a rescue flight had been organized to save people stranded both above and below Beaver Falls; however, one person by the name of Nickerson went missing after being taken into the stream about half a mile upstream of its junction with the Colorado River. A rescue flight helped people who were stranded below and above Beaver Falls, though Chenoa Nickerson remains missing’, said the NPS. She was not wearing a life jacket when she was swept away into Havasu Creek about 0.5 miles upriver from where it flows into Colorado River.
She wore black sleeveless top and shorts as well as blue hiking boots before disappearing. As search teams continue looking for her, she has still not been found.
On Thursday there was a flash flood warning issued by National Weather Service for numerous areas within Coconino County including Havasu Creek basin and its environs. This notice warned of potential dangers due to rapidly rising water levels and swift currents in those affected locations.
