'Efforts we've been putting in ...': Coach T Dilip explains India's intense fielding drills ahead of BGT opener

NEW DELHI: With the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy just two days away, Team India is leaving no stone unturned in its preparations for the five-match series against Australia, set to commence on Friday in Perth. The intense build-up has seen players participate in focused practice and simulation sessions to sharpen their skills and readiness for the crucial opener.
On Wednesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a video showcasing Team India’s fielding drills at Perth stadium. Fielding coach T Dilip led the session, outlining the objectives of the high-energy drills aimed at honing key match-specific skills.

“What we wanted to do today is, we want everyone to get together in a team drill but also get closer to the match setup,” explained Dilip. “That’s why today’s drill was more related to our retrieving where a boundary fielder will throw to the in-fielder. Instead of one loopy long throw, we wanted to have two good flat throws.”

Dilip further elaborated on the technical aspects of the session. “We wanted players to practice standing either towards the left or the right, ensuring they are in the proper position and not wasting time turning. This also helps boundary fielders stay aware that another player is waiting for the ball, allowing them to deliver an accurate bouncer or full throw into their hands. That was the main idea of today’s drill.”
The session wasn’t just about technical refinement but also about fostering team spirit and camaraderie. Dilip shared his enthusiasm for the players’ approach. “After the session, I am very happy. I would say the players have really put the intensity up there. Today, I got a sense of how well the team is working together. That’s why I started with a little competition post-warm-up, adding fun and laughter to help them kick off together.”

The fielding coach expressed satisfaction with the players’ adaptability and effort, particularly in different fielding scenarios. “Today, whether it was slip catching, outfield catching, or running back, the players were really up for it. Literally, I had to stop certain players from overdoing it. But I am very happy with how they’ve responded. Today’s session was outstanding – an ideal finish to the efforts we’ve been putting in over the last few days.”
India’s meticulous preparation signals their intent to bring their best to the iconic Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where the world’s top two Test sides will face off in a contest that promises thrilling cricket.
