The Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP government in Haryana was thrown into crisis on Tuesday after three independent legislators withdrew their support and announced that they would contest for the Congress party in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
The 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana will go to polls on May 25 in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections.
Three MLAs – Sombir Sangwan, Randhir Gollen and Dharampal Gonder – wrote to Haryana Governor Ban Bandaru Dattatreya, said they would withdraw support to the Seni-led government.
How does the Haryana Congress fare after three independents withdrew their support?
- After Tuesday’s developments, the BJP now has 40 MLAs in the 90-member Haryana Assembly.
- The BJP has also received support from two other independent MLAs – Nayan Pal Rawat from Pritra and Rakesh Daulatabad from Badshapur (Rakesh Daulatabad) and Gopal Kanda of Haryana Lokhit Party.
- The BJP won a total of 43 MLAs, two short of half of the 45 MLAs.
- However, the BJP claims unofficial support from 4-5 JJP MLAs saying it is actually 47 years old and safe.
- JJP MLAs are yet to declare their support due to the anti-defection law.
- On the other hand, the Congress has 30 MLAs, the JJP, a former ally of the BJP, has 10 MLAs and the INLD has one MLA.
- Another independent MP from Meham, Balraj Kundu, has yet to make his position clear.
