Gautam Gambhir, who used to be the opening batsman, has been named as the new coach of men’s cricket team in India lead. This announcement was made on Tuesday and Gambhir will take over during the next tour to Sri Lanka at the end of this month.
Gambhir, who coached Kolkata Knight Riders to their maiden IPL 2024 title, replaces Rahul Dravid whose tenure ended with a winning T20 World Cup campaign.
Natasha Jain, wife of Gambhir, responded through her Instagram stories expressing pride and support for her husband. “Because he deserves to lead…”, she wrote signaling that she believes in his ability to guide the national team.
Although Gambhir has never officially coached professional cricketers before, his previous work as an IPL mentor has given him a good platform in preparation for this job. BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed the appointment saying that Gambhir could bring success to the Indian side.
Gambhir’s transition from player to mentor is marked by his ability to inspire teams and lead them effectively. A two-time world cup winner and former politician, it is expected that his diverse experiences would offer a fresh outlook into Indian Cricket Team.
As such, one watches with bated breaths if this 42-year-old can maintain his successful run of record whilst leading India further up on international frontiers.
