On Monday, protesters stormed into the palace of Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. There are reports that Hasina fled Dhaka as mass protests called for her resignation.
Channel 24 Bangladesh showed crowds on video entering the premier’s residence in the capital city. The demonstrators destroyed furniture, broke glass panes of doors and carried away books together with other things like a live chicken.
“I am inside Ganabhaban Palace,” remarked Bangladeshi journalist Yeasir Arafat.“ In total, more than 1500 individuals are inside. They have broken furniture as well as glasses.”
According to an AFP source close to Sheikh Hasina, the 76-year-old prime minister left Dhaka with her sister “for a safer place”. The same source added that she“wanted to record a speech but she could not get an opportunity to do that”.
Prothom Alo daily also reported that Sheikh Hasina had escaped from Dhaka.
