On Saturday, the Indian cricket team will begin another journey by taking on Sri Lanka, in Colombo, in the first of a three-match T-20 series. They are ushering in a new era under head coach Gautam Gambhir and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav.
A significant number of changes have already been made to the Indian cricket team by Gambhir who succeeded Rahul Dravid after India’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign
Among the most notable decisions was appointing Hardik Pandya’s replacement as T20I captain with Suryakumar Yadav. I am not just focusing on this choice but rather moving closer to the start of the series opener about this and what it holds for us next. In an interview published by BCCI on its social media handle, undeniably talented Suryakumar gives his opinion about his relationship with Gautam Gambhir which he terms as very special and strong.”
He explained that: “Yeh jo relation hai, bahut special hai. Kyunki main jab 2014 me gaya tha, I played under him for KKR. It was special because wahan se opportunity mila khelne ka, franchise ke liye aur… Jo bolte hena tum teen kadam chale , aap bhi do kadam aaye , aur bich me kahi toh mile . Toh waisa relationship tha . Aur abhi bhi woh relationship waise ka waise hi hai , strong.”
Suryakumar said it was unique because he had played under Gabir during their time at Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014 season. He adds that their association began there as since then he got chances to play for the franchise among others…that is how they called it . When you say one word, you take three steps , two steps come from you and meet somewhere along the way. That is the kind of relationship. It’s still like that and it’s so strong even now,” Surya add in a video interview release by BCCI on its social media handle.
They reflected on their past experiences in Kolkata Knight Riders, underscoring the understanding and support they have shared over the years together. He is confident that this will translate to their new roles in the Indian team.
“But he knows ki main kaise kaam karta hoon. What my mindset is when I come to practice sessions? How he tries to work as a coach. And it’s all about that lovely relationship we have and very excited to see how it goes forward.”, finished Suryakumar with a smile.
The new team captaincy leadership has brought spotlight on India’s game strategy and performance going into the series against Sri Lanka. Gambhir taking over as head coach, along with Suryakumar being named captain shows a new approach aimed at building upon their successes and bringing up Indian cricket again.
