SEOUL: On Tuesday, Australia’s Foreign Minister said that defense agreement between North Korea and Russia is “risky for the world” as well as “destabilizing” after a visit to the tense border village split by North and South Korea.
The pact was signed in June by Russian President Vladimir Putin and the leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un who agreed on mutual military assistance if any country is attacked hence further increasing fears over expanding relations between the nations. As a result, America has constantly accused North Korea of supplying necessary conventional weapons to Russia in return for military and economic support during her war with Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters following her visit south of Panmunjom -the Korean border village – Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said, “I also want to say something about the security pact between North Korea and Russia. And again this is destabilizing. This is risky for the world and again we say Russia is behaving in ways which are not conducive to peace but are escalatory.”
According to Wong, these tests that have been going on for some time now are also threatening regional peace. She commented, “We share great concerns about DPRK’s escalatory reactions, destabilizing actions,” using an abbreviation acronym of Pyongyang’s official name, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
On Tuesday also, Wong met Cho Tae-yul who is South Korean Foreign Minister in Seoul where they both concurred in working with other countries globally concerning the military partnership between DPRK and Russia according to Seoul’s Foreign Ministry.
