NEW DELHI: Pakistan secured their first one-day international (ODI) series victory in Australia in 22 years, defeating the hosts by eight wickets in the third and final match at Perth Stadium on Sunday.
Pakistan’s formidable seam attack dismantled Australia, restricting them to a meager total of 140 in 31.5 overs, before chasing it down comfortably, finishing at 143/2 in just 26.5 overs.
The series victory marks a significant achievement for Pakistan, who last won an ODI series on Australian soil in 2002. Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan’s newly appointed captain, expressed his joy after the win, acknowledging the historical significance of the moment and the satisfaction it would bring to fans back home.”Special moment for me, the nation will be very happy today,” Rizwan said in his post-match interview. “We didn’t perform as per expectations in the last couple of years.”
Australia, prioritizing their upcoming five-Test series against India, rested key players for the series decider, a move that backfired as Pakistan dominated the match. The tourists had narrowly lost the opening game but rebounded with a commanding nine-wicket victory in the second ODI, setting up the decisive third match.
Rizwan heaped praise on his bowlers, crediting their stellar performance for dismantling Australia’s batting lineup. “All the credit to the bowlers,” Rizwan remarked. “Australia in Australia isn’t easy. The conditions suit their style of playing, but the bowlers were outstanding.”
He also highlighted the contribution of his openers, who made the chase look effortless, allowing Pakistan to claim a comprehensive win. “Credit to the two openers, they made the chases easy,” the captain added, dedicating the victory to Pakistan’s passionate fanbase. “They (fans) don’t care a lot about the results, but the people back home are always behind us, and I want to dedicate this victory to them.”
On his captaincy, Rizwan lightheartedly added: “I’m the captain only for the toss and presentations – everyone gives me suggestions on the field, the batting group and the bowling group.”
