On Sunday, police reported that a mass shooting on Friday in Fordyce, Arkansas at the Mad Butcher grocery left four dead and nine injured, including one 23-year-old nurse who had been shot while assisting another victim.
Mike Hagar, the Colonel of the Arkansas State Police said Callie Weems was a very brave woman.
“Instead of running away from the shop she stopped to help in what I consider one of the most selfless acts that I have ever seen,” said Hagar.
Posey Travis Eugene, a 44-year-old suspect involved in exchange fire with the police is facing four counts of capital murder. He opened fire on his victims using a shotgun which he aimed at people near the shop parking area before entering inside where he did some more shootings. According to Woodrow Tommy Weems, her father, she belonged to three generations of nurses and loved horses hence earning herself nickname “Woodrow” after character name from “Lonesome Dove”.
As her father Tommy Weems puts it: “She died doing what she always does: Helping.”
The other individuals killed were identified by police as Shirley Taylor (62), Roy Sturgis (50) and Ellen Shrum (81). The age bracket for those injured range between 20-65 years and two of them were security officers. Six officers responded quickly according to Hagar.
During such instance we witnessed both sides of humanity at its best”. They were brave enough to put their own lives between civilians and shooter” He noted
Hagar referred to this attack as “completely random, senseless act.” Investigators say they do not know why someone would commit such an action yet. Posey had used buck shots mostly armed himself with a twelve gauge shotgun alongside a pistol.
